Depot

The depot lies 2.5 kilometres along the embankment from the abandoned town of Yermakovo on the banks of the Yenisei; around it the main embankment splits into a number of connecting sections and branch lines. The oblong building, measuring 60m x 15m, is completely made of wood and its roof has collapsed.

The depot in Yermakovo was the largest structure we discovered during the expedition. The preserved walls and supporting roof beams suggest precise carpentry work. The northern half (30m x 15m) comprises an extensive repair shop for locomotive maintenance and contains a double repair track and space for under-body repairs. Lots of bolts, iron components, instruments and dangerous boards with nails from when the roof caved in are strewn about. The southern half of the depot is separated by a wall and contains several rooms that evidently served for maintenance and administrative purposes.
